Tyler proposed where Katie would least expect it – the swim centre where they both worked and fell for each other! There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when he declared his love in front of their family and friends, and the whimsical wedding they planned was straight out of Katie’s childhood dreams. Think beautiful winery setting, a circular arbour of lush greenery framing their vows, and cake cutting backed by fireworks!
The Planning Experience
“I was one of those little girls who dreamt about her wedding! For as long as I can remember, I have been gathering pictures and inspiration, so I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted. I was just so excited that it was finally happening I enjoyed every bit of it. Sure, there were a couple of stressful moments, like when someone pulled out with less than a week to go, or trying to keep everyone happy with the seating plan. But wedding planning is only stressful if you make it!”
“We got married on the lawn, in front of a large foliage arbour, which is the stuff of my dreams! Greenery and florals decorated the crossback timber chairs beside the aisle with white rose petals used to line it and for our petal toss bar. Our colour palette of greens and whites accentuated the magnificent grounds of the venue.”
“Keeping the whole experience stress free and enjoyable was really important to me. I knew I was only going to get to do this once, so I took a few moments each week to stop and reflect on how special the whole process was, and soak in all the excitement. It really does go so quickly. Our colour scheme and theme was also another really important part of the planning for me. I knew exactly what I wanted, and I was eager to see it followed through from the invitations to the ceremony and reception.”
The Guest Experience
“I’ve been to many weddings, and when you are looked after as a guest, it makes the whole day much more enjoyable. We made sure there was shade, seating, drinks and canapés between the ceremony and reception, as well as lawn games for the more adventurous! We organised transport and provided special toiletry boxes, dancefloor thongs, a Polaroid station with enough film for keepsakes, honey as our bonbonnieres and a flower wrapping station.”
Finding the Dress
“This part of the planning was so special, and a bit surreal! When you dream about something happening for so long, it feels a little strange when it finally happens. I had envisioned a figure hugging, lace wedding dress, with a beautifully detailed back. I bought the dress from a small boutique – it was perfect! The stunning crochet lace created an elegant detail and the back of the dress was so flattering and was unlike anything else I had come across. I knew it was ‘The One’ as soon as I tried it on! When I walked out, my mum and maid of honour started crying. I was sold!”
“We wanted our reception to be one big party! With 150 guests, an incredible four piece live band and a whole lot of love and joy, we partied well into the night. Behind our bridal table was a large gold frame that had lots of greenery and white orchids. We used crisp white linens and white bentwood chairs, and our signs were all set on a white background, with a beautiful cursive font. Our centrepieces were large installations of greenery and white native florals. Our frames were spray painted gold, and we had gold candles on the tables. It created the gorgeous whimsical, natural theme we were aiming for.”
1. Spend some time together after you get engaged. It can be so easy to get swept up and start the wedding planning with family and friends. It’s nice to just take some time to soak in all the excitement and emotions with just the two of you.
2. Pick a theme and stick to it! Have a budget, keep lists, use spreadsheets and take it one step at a time. Also use a professional team to set up on the day if you can.
