What’s something you’d love every couple to know about wedding flowers?
A talented and experienced wedding florist is worth their weight in gold! Good wedding florists will take the time to get to know your preferences and recommend designs that enhance the overall styling for the day, often incorporating glassware, ceramics, linen and candles in their work.
What’s something couples are often surprised to learn?
It’s actually really hard work. There’s a lot of physical, messy, logistically complicated elements and changing priorities. The fun stuff (making beautiful flower arrangements) is a very small part of running a flower business.
What do your couples say they love most about what you do?
One lovely comment I frequently get is that I’m easy to communicate with. My couples always appreciate being taken care of promptly and feel that I’ve taken the time to understand their particular flower needs.
How do you create a great experience for your couples?
I make a point to follow up enquiries as they come in and field any following correspondence quickly – no one likes waiting around for replies! I have a detailed Style Guide that I provide my enquiries which outlines all my offerings and is beautifully illustrated with real weddings to help get a feel for what I do.
These days a lot of my consults are via email or phone, but I do meet in person in my studio where couples can also view my range of vases and hire items. I have good systems in place to ensure a smooth and timely process up until the big day, when I personally oversee the delivery and installation of the florals.
What’s your best advice for couples planning their wedding flowers?
1. The most important thing to do is surround yourself with suppliers whose work you love and trust. Once you have that team in place, let them do what they are best at and tick that element off your list.
2. Be open to suggestion and conscious that flowers are perishable, seasonal things. Pinterest images may not necessarily be a good indication of reality or what is available in your part of the world.
3. Everyone has a budget, no question, and flowers are expensive. Be honest about what you are comfortable spending and what is most important to you, then be guided by your florist so the best impact for your brief is achieved!
